What is Heartgard Plus?

How it works:

Heartgard Plus contains ivermectin, a broad-spectrum antiparasitic medication used to prevent heartworms. Heartgard Plus also contains Pyrantel Pamoate, an anthelminthic, used to prevent roundworms and hookworms.

Directions for Use

Heartgard (Ivermectin) is given once a month year round for the prevention of heartworm disease. The usual dose of ivermectin in dogs up to 25lbs (11.3kg) is 68mcg – 1 tablet from blue pack, for 26-50lbs (11.kg – 22.6kg) is 136mcg – 1 tablet from green pack and for 51lbs - 100lb (23.1kg – 45.3kg) is 272mcg – 1 tablet from brown pack.  Dogs over 100lbs (45.3kg) are given a combination of the tablets.

Possible Side Effects

The side effects of ivermectin are rare at the recommended dosage. Heartgard Tablets has a wide margin of safety for all sizes and breeds of dogs. It is approved for use in puppies as young as 6 weeks, small dogs regardless of weight, pregnant or breeding bitches, stud dogs, and Collies.

Directions for use

  • Administer Heartgard Plus orally to your dog monthly without fail.
  • Use the recommended minimum dose of 2.72 mcg of ivermectin per lb of body weight.
  • Also, ensure the administration of 2.27 mg of pyrantel (as pamoate salt) per lb of body weight.
  • This dosing regimen is essential for preventing canine heartworm disease and managing ascarids and hookworms.

  • From 6 weeks of age, dogs can start using Heartgard Plus.
  • For dogs weighing over 100lbs (45.3kg), ensure the correct combination of chewables is administered.

Caution

  • Before commencing Heartgard Plus treatment, conduct tests to confirm the absence of heartworm infection in all dogs.
  • Remember, Heartgard Plus doesn't address adult D. immitis, so infected dogs need alternative treatment.
  • Treat infected dogs to eradicate adult heartworms and microfilariae before starting Heartgard Plus.
  • Although ivermectin in Heartgard Plus may affect some microfilariae, it doesn't fully eliminate them.
  • Be vigilant for mild hypersensitivity reactions, such as transient diarrhea, in certain dogs after treatment.
